Frequently Asked Questions

Q: When does the marking period end?
A: Marking period end dates are:
  • Marking Period 1: November 14, 2023
  • Marking Period 2: January 26, 2023
  • Marking Period 3: April 9, 2023
  • Marking Period 4: June 13, 2023

Q: Can my student turn in a homework or classwork assignment late?
A: Students are always welcome to complete and turn in assignments, even past the due date. The purpose of classwork and homework is to practice a skill, complete part of a larger assignment or prepare for an upcoming assignment or assessment, so completing an assignment, even late, is beneficial.

Q: Can my student turn in homework or classwork late and still get credit?
A: The policy for homework and classwork is: Homework or classwork turned in 1 day late earns full credit.  Homework or classwork turned in 2 days late and up to 2 weeks late earns HALF credit. After 2 weeks late, assignments earn a ZERO and will not be accepted. EXCEPTION  - Once we review answers to a homework assignment in class, the assignment may not be completed for credit.

The late policy is for occasional use, mostly for technical issues, and may be revoked for students who abuse the grace period.

Assignments turned in late will not be graded immediately, and students and families should expect a significant delay before grades are updated.

Q: Can my student turn in a project late and still get credit?
A: Late projects earn a 10% deduction from the earned grade for each day late.  Don't assume a one-day-late project earns 90% - that assumes the project would have earned 100% on time.

Q: My student was absent and unable to hand in the assignment due that day.  Will this assignment be counted as late?
A: No. Homework (or a project) turned in upon returning from absence will not be considered late.

Q: Did my student turn in all homework assignments?
A: Check PowerSchool to see if your student is turning in homework and other assignments.

Q: On PowerSchool there is a -- instead of a grade.  Is this a zero?  I know my student turned in the assignment.
A: The -- symbol on PowerSchool means no grade has yet been entered.  The grade is not a zero; it's simply blank.

Q: PowerSchool shows a grade of zero for an assignment.  Does this mean my student did not turn in the assignment?
A: Probably. If the grade is blue, click on it to read the comment attached to the grade.

Q: PowerSchool shows a grade of zero for an assignment, but my student was absent for this assignment.
A: Any assignment not turned in is scored as a zero until made up so students see what their grades will be if work is not made up. Students who missed an assignment due to absence should complete and submit the assignment, and the grade will be updated. This policy also applies to test and quizzes missed due to absence.

Q: Why did my student get the grade they did on a project?
A: Your student can best answer this question. Ask your student to show you the graded project or the grading rubric for the project. Also check for comments on PowerSchool.

Q: Can you give me my PowerSchool username or password?
A: No. Guidance counselors have PowerSchool log in information.

Q: When I check PowerSchool all I see is my student's marking period grades.  How do I check if my student is missing homework assignments?
A: Once logged on to PowerSchool, you should see your student's grades by marking period.  Click on the marking period grade to display a list of all assignments and grades.  Any item in blue is hyperlinked and can be clicked on for additional information.  Click on an assignment name to read assignment details; click on an assignment grade to see comments attached to the grade. If a homework grade is 0, likely your student did not complete or turn in the assignment.

Q: Can my student do extra credit work to bring up his/her grade?
A: Extra credit opportunities are rare, and only available to students who complete all regular assignments, so students should take advantage of extra credit when it is offered.  Extra credit is not available on an individual basis for bringing up a poor grade at the end of the marking period.
