6th Grade Health Course Outline

BORDENTOWN REGIONAL MIDDLE SCHOOL

6TH GRADE HEALTH COURSE OUTLINE

GOAL:

Students will experience an integration of major subject areas:  they will use math, technology and writing skills in their discovery of health.  Students will experience class instruction, Internet research, and cooperative learning.  Health curriculum to be covered is in alignment with the Core Content Standards of the State of New Jersey and include:   Drug Effects Abuse/Use/Misuse, over the counter drugs, Communicable and Non-Communicable Diseases, Mental Diseases, health triangle, decision making steps and goal setting.

CLASSROOM PROGRAMS:

Officer Edwards will be implementing the LEADS (Law Enforcement Against Drugs) program on Tuesdays throughout the marking period. This program addresses the same curriculum topics outlined above.

Lifelines’ prevention program will also be presented during this class.  Parents should have received additional information with the welcoming back packet. More specifics of this program will be shared at a parent meeting later this fall.

CLASSROOM ATMOSPHERE:

The classroom will have individual seating arrangements but may have some assignments that will be done in collaboration with others.  Students are encouraged to engage in class discussions.

STUDENT EVALUATION:

A student’s marking period grade will be on a basis of point accumulation.  Assignments will be given a point value that will be added and calculated throughout the marking period.

MAKE-UP WORK:

Class policy for a student that is absent is that the student will have the number of days they were absent to turn in any work missed during that period of time.  It is the responsibility of the student to check and make sure all missed work is completed.

PROJECTS:

A grading criteria/rubrics will be issued to each student so all components of a project are clear.

SUPPLIES:

Students will be required to bring a pen/ pencil, highlighter and folder with lined paper  to class daily.  Occasionally we will be working on projects that students will be using colored pencils or markers to enhance their work.
