WHAT IS A LEARNING DISABILITIES TEACHER-CONSULTANT (LDT-C)?
A Learning Disabilities Teacher Consultant functions as an educational diagnostician who is part of a multidisciplinary group; the Child Study Team (CST).
Role of the LDT-C
- Evaluates students who are referred to the CST to determine academic strengths and weaknesses and present levels of achievement
- Works collaboratively with other CST members (school psychologist, school social worker, and when appropriate, related service providers such as the speech and language pathologist, occupational therapist and physical therapist) to determine a student’s eligibility for special education and related services
- With other team members, including teachers and parents, develops the Individual Education Program (IEP) for students classified as eligible for special education and related services
- Works to ensure that parents understand their rights and their child’s rights concerning the NJ special education administrative code, N.J.A.C. 6A:14
- Provides assistance to teachers with the design and implementation of specialized instructional strategies for students with special needs
Case Management Responsibilities
- Maintains and monitors each student’s IEP
- Attends referral, eligibility and annual IEP review meetings
- Observes students in the classroom on a continual basis
- Keeps in touch with parents and teachers to address any concerns
- Reevaluates students with IEPs every three years or more often as necessary
- Meets regularly with other team members to review cases and share ideas
- Keeps up to date about information regarding any revisions or addendums to N.J.A.C. 6A:14.
