8TH GRADE HEALTH
GOAL:
Students will develop an understanding of the human body and decisions that effect general health. Students will experience an integration of major subject areas: they will use math, technology and writing skills in their discovery of health. Students will experience class instruction, Internet research, and cooperative learning. Health curriculum to be covered is in alignment with the Core Content Standard of the State of New Jersey and will include: Relationships, Family Life, Sexually Transmitted Infections, and Diversity.
CLASSROOM ATMOSPHERE:
The classroom will have cooperative group and individual seating arrangements depending upon the particular activities. Students will engage in cooperative group activities and will be encouraged to work and communicate in groups in the regular classroom. Individual seating will be utilized for lecture and testing situations.
STUDENT EVALUATION:
Tests will be given at the completion of each unit. Homework, projects, class participation/preparation and cooperative learning activities will also be part of the final marking period grade. The student’s marking period grade consists of, 35% tests, 25% class participation/preparation, and 40% projects. The final egg baby project will be weighted as two project grades. This project will be broken down into smaller assignments that will also be counted toward the final grade.
MAKE-UP WORK:
Class policy for a student that is absent is that the student will have the number of days they were absent to turn in any work missed during that period of time. It is the responsibility of the student to check and make sure all missed work is completed.
PROJECTS:
Students will work on cooperative projects in class as well as independent projects. Students will be graded individually on group projects. A grading criteria will be issued to each student so all components of a project are clear.
SUPPLIES:
Students will be required to bring a lecture notebook, pen, pencil, covered text folder and assignment book to class daily. Failure to do so will result in lowering of the student’s preparation grade.
