ALL band members now have rehearsal Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday during AE. Students should check in with their AE teachers for attendance, then get their instruments and go to the stage.
Jazz band meets on Wednesdays and Fridays during AE.
Small group lessons are pulled out from alternating AM/PM humanities. The schedule is posted on the auditorium doors and music bulletin board, and the daily schedule is read on the morning announcement and written on the whiteboard outside of the auditorium.

BRMS Music Dept. t-shirts are available to purchase for $10. We accept cash or checks made payable to BRMS. Sizes are adult small through extra large.

MARCHING SCOTTIES

Our award-winning marching band is composed of woodwind, brass, percussion, and colorguard students in grades 7-12. We perform at all BRHS home football games and compete every weekend in the USBands circuit.

Our 2023 field show is "The Tribal Affect", a play on words to show how community affects us as individuals.

Concert Etiquette

This is an important topic which we will cover before all performances with the students and at the beginning of all performances with the audience. Good concert etiquette shows respect to the hours and hours of hard work that teachers and students have put into making the concert an enjoyable evening.

***We encourage you to bring small children, but if they become fussy or noisy, please step into the hallway or lobby with them.
***All electronics should be silenced (not on vibrate) and dimmed.
***Take as many photos as you like, but please turn off the flash.
***There is NO food or drink permitted in the PAC.
***All students will stay for the duration of the concert; as such, families should stay for the entire performance.
***Please do not interrupt the performance by leaving or entering during a song (unless it is to take care of a crying baby or something like that. :-)
***Do not talk or whisper during performances as this is distracting to other audience members.

email blast from 3/20 "parent/teacher conference sign-ups (tomorrow)"

Hi everyone! I was supposed to send this email out last Friday, but I neglected to do so- my apologies! If anyone would like to meet with me for a parent/teacher conference tomorrow afternoon and talk about what an awesome musician your BRMS Bobcat is, please sign up here. I can answer questions about performances, lessons, rehearsals, behavior, attendance, field trips, extracurricular opportunities, purchasing/renting instruments, or anything else on your mind. Thank you!!
 
A lot of students have been asking me interesting questions about what is going on with the board of education meeting happening this evening. I encourage you to attend to stay informed and, if desired, have your voice heard. You can sign up to speak before 5pm using this form, and a paper sign-up will be in the lobby before the meeting. It is at 7pm tonight (Wednesday) in the BRHS PAC, that wonderful hall where you've been listening to your children make music for the past 7-10 years. I don't currently have any answers to those interesting questions, but please know I am here for you and your children always!

music in the parks 2024

Good afternoon, families of BRMS band members!
The permission slip for our annual Music in the Parks trip is attached to this email and posted on my website. Paper slips went home this past week and are due by the end of next week, Friday March 8th. (if you need an extension on the payment, let me know but still send in the slip by next Friday.) Please save the top portion of the slip as well as this email for pertinent details. This email is also posted on my website.
-The price is $81, unless the student has a season pass, in which case it is $34. Food is not included in this number, so students should bring money. Cash is not accepted at the park, but there are kiosks where cash can be turned into cards.
-Students should wear their BRMS Music Department t-shirts and whatever else they plan on wearing in the park. T-shirts are still available for $10.
-ALL BRMS music ensembles will be called down at 9:45 on Friday, May 31st to head to Jackson Liberty High School. Anything other than instruments, folders, and whatever students want to bring to the park should stay at BRMS.
-We will perform/compete at staggered times between 11 and 12:30. When a student is not performing or in the warm-up space, they will be in the audience for other performing ensembles. They may also purchase light snacks at this time (cash only).
-We will then load up the equipment bus with instruments and folders, which will head back to BRMS. Students and chaperones will head straight to Six Flags.
-We will meet up for the awards ceremony at the park, but otherwise students are free to roam the park. They will stay in small groups and be assigned a chaperone for check-ins.
-Depending on the timing of the awards ceremony, we will leave the park around 5:30-6 to return to BRMS, at which point they will need to be picked up. Exact timing will be communicated as the trip date approaches.
-If you are interested in chaperoning, please contact me. Chaperone tickets are $47, unless you have a season pass (in which case it's "free").
-Students participation in this trip is contingent on behavior and attendance at rehearsals.

email blast from 12/21 "Congrats on a fabulous winter concert! 🎶❄🌟"

Hello everyone! Thank you for coming out on Monday night to listen to and cheer on our fabulous, young music-makers! I was very pleased with the overall performances and was lucky to witness some very special moments within the ensembles. I will post some videos to the BAND google classroom over the next few days. If you have any great pictures you'd like to share, please send them my way!
Here is a link to a GC post with websites that have fun, free sheet music, including holiday stuff. Please encourage your children to pick up their instruments over break and play through some tunes- this will help us quickly get started on our next piece "DarkHeart" in January. Bonus points if they perform at a family get-together!!
The jazz band is performing tomorrow, Friday 12/22 at 8:30am. Students should wear either BRMS music shirts, Bordentown shirts/colors, or ugly sweaters.
 
When we return on Tuesday, Jan. 2nd, there is an AEP block in the morning, but jazz band will NOT be rehearsing at that time. Students should use this time to catch up on any work they missed this week due to all of our activities. Brass lessons WILL take place on Tuesday 1/2, flutes, clarinets, and jazz band will meet on Wednesday 1/3, saxophones and concert band will meet on Thursday 1/4, and beginners/make-ups and jazz band will meet on Friday 1/5. All of this will be communicated to students via the morning announcements and my whiteboard.
 
Thank you so much for your support over the past few months as we prepared for the winter concert. It's a mad dash getting everything rolling during these first few months of school, and I appreciate all the times parents dropped off forgotten instruments, sent in messages about students missing rehearsals, or sent notes of triumph regarding students' achievements outside of school. I neglected to thank you verbally at the concert, so please know that none of this is possible without at-home support and I truly value it! THANK YOU! I also neglected to thank our ever-supportive administration, starting all the way at the top. Dr. Atkins is a huge advocate for the arts and I consider myself lucky to get to work with her. Mr. Sprague and Mr. Schurtz would do anything for these students, and that's not the norm. We are so lucky and I am so grateful!

email blast from 12/6: 🎵☃️🎶 concert 12/18 info (long- save for future reference!)

Hello everyone! We are now 12 days from the Band Winter Concert, and I am so pleased with how things are shaping up. The ensembles are sounding more cohesive every day, and I have been impressed with how many students have made it their goal to truly master their music. To say I'm proud is an understatement, and I'm sure you'll feel the same way at the conclusion of our concert. I know the students are excited to get under those bright lights and show off all of their hard work and musical skills. 🎶
 
Monday, December 18th at 7pm at the Bordentown Regional HIGH School Performing Arts Center
Students should report at 6:30 with their instruments and sheet music. Instruments must go home with students after school that day as BRMS will not be accessible before the concert.
Upon entering the main doors of the high school, students will head straight downstairs to the music room to warm up their instruments. The PAC doors will open to audience members at 6:30.
Students in jazz band should wear all black, and concert band students should wear a white top and black bottom. Shoes should be black/dark. Festive touches are fine as long as they're not distracting. (ties, hats, necklaces, etc.) Jazz students do not need to change into a white shirt for concert band. Reach out with any uncertainties.
I expect the concert to be less than an hour long- plenty of time to go get ice cream afterward!
On Monday morning, we will rehearse at the high school. This is an important part of the concert prep as students will practice the flow of the event and acclimate themselves to the acoustic and lighting differences compared to the auditorium that they're used to. Please make every effort to get your awesome young musician to school on time that day with their instruments and sheet music ready to go.
Students not in jazz band will not need their instruments for the rest of that week due to planned activities. Jazz band will rehearse on Thursday 12/21 and perform for the school during the pep rally on Friday 12/22. Jazz students should wear their BRMS music department T-shirts or an ugly sweater that day. Shirts are still available for $10.
Any student who is interested in trying out for the jazz band for spring semester can do so in January. Materials will be posted to the Google classroom. Current members do not need to re-audition.
 
A note on concert etiquette:

Most importantly!
  • Do not talk or whisper during performances as this is distracting to other audience members and the performers. Please express your enthusiastic support by applauding and cheering after a piece finishes. For jazz soloists, clap whenever you like what you hear!

email blast from 11/13 "conferences and schedule for the rest of 2023"

Hello band families! Here is a link to sign up for a parent teacher conference with me. It is optional, but I'd love to sing the praises of your amazing young musician, meet some new families, and answer any questions you have. There are two dates with separate links for the Teams meetings, and I will send out the link the morning of the conferences.
Concert band and jazz band WINTER CONCERT Monday, December 18th at 7pm at the Bordentown Regional HIGH SCHOOL Performing Arts Center! Students report at 6:30 wearing black and/or white (jazz students wear all black). More info is on my website and the band handbok.
No lessons this Wednesday as it is the first day of quarter 2; lessons can be made up on Thursday or Friday.
Because there is no AE during half days, all music students will be pulled from core 2 this Friday 11/17 and next Wednesday 11/22. We've done this in years past and it has always worked out well, but if your child has an issue or needs to stay in core 2 either of those days, that's ok. Teachers are pretty flexible on these half days leading up to Thanksgiving, and it gives the music students extremely valuable time to prepare for the upcoming concerts. Mixed choir students will attend both choir and band rehearsal during this time.
The mixed choir, select choir, bucket drumming, and orchestra Winter Concert is on Monday, December 7th at 7pm at the BRHS PAC.
Have you heard your child play their instrument lately? I encourage you to ask them to bring their instrument home and show off what they're learning. At-home practicing and informal performances elevate a student's technical ability and motivates them to keep striving to be better. As I like to say, the hardest part of practicing an instrument at home is opening up the case. 😄

Cultural Festival & Craft Holiday Fair @ Burlington County Library in Westampton

From the Burlington County Libraries website:

Join us at the Burlington County Library for a fun filled day with handmade and diverse art & craft for sale, live music and food for purchase at the Burlington County Library, Westampton, NJ.

At 2 pm the Wind Symphony of Southern Jersey will be performing in the Library Auditorium during the festival. This 42-piece orchestral performance of the symphony's repertoire includes seasonal sounds and festive melodies. Founded in 1965 by Lucien Cailliet as the Cherry Hill Wind Symphony, the group has performed throughout the Delaware Valley.

This is a free indoor event, and families are welcome.

Additional Notes:

  • The Auditorium has a strict seating capacity of 250 people.
  • Tickets will be offered at the auditorium door, beginning at 1:30pm.
  • Tickets are strictly limited to one per person, multiple tickets will not be offered to a single person.
  • Your ticket guarantees a seat in the auditorium; you do not have to remain in line once you receive a ticket.
  • Auditorium seating will begin at 1:50pm

2023 Middle School Band Day with the BRHS Marching Scotties

Hello, families of BRMS musicians! Our annual "Middle School Day" with the nearly-world-famous, award-winning, newly OPEN CLASS (it's a big deal) BRHS Marching Scotties is Friday, October 6th at 4:30pm. This is a fun event that is open to all middle schoolers regardless of their intentions to join marching band in the future.
Please fill out this form if your child will be attending Middle School Band Day on 10/6.
Students should be dropped off at 4:30 at the side doors of BRHS, near the athletic field lot. I will be outside directing them into the band room where they will meet marching band students in their sections, set up their instruments, and rehearse "Sweet Caroline" and the school fight song. We will then march up to the football field together. Students will stay with me on the sidelines while the band performs pre-game, then we will all sit together in the stands. Students may look off of their neighbors' music and play along with other stands tunes if they are feeling bold, otherwise they'll just play the fight song at every touchdown and "Sweet Caroline" at some point. At halftime, we will stand together on the sidelines and watch the band perform their 2023 competitive show "The Tribal Affect". Students have the third quarter off to visit the concession stand, and they must stay in the complex. We will reconvene in the stands for the 4th quarter, then march back to the school after the football game ends. A Remind text will be sent out when the game is finished, and students can be picked up where they were dropped off on the side of the school. Text code @3fbbh9 to 81010 to join the BRMS Band Remind.
I recommend wearing the BRMS Music Department t-shirt, but please dress for the weather!
There is no deadline to sign up for this event, but the sooner I know who is attending, the earlier they can get the sheet music. Families are welcome to attend the game as well, but you will need to purchase tickets at the gate. $4 adults/$2 children This football game is also homecoming, so it will be more busy than usual.
